Here’s some news worth smiling about: you may qualify for extra help paying Medicare costs — and it could come with bonus benefits. If you have Medicare and meet the income guidelines for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), you might not only get help with your premiums, but you could also unlock other savings and even qualify for a special type of Medicare Advantage Plan.
What is the Medicare Savings Program?
The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) is a Medicaid-administered program that helps people with limited income pay for their Medicare costs. Depending on your income, the MSP may also pay for deductibles and coinsurance. When you enroll in an MSP, you automatically get Extra Help, a federal program that covers most of your Medicare prescription drug (Part D) plan costs.
And unlike Medicaid, there’s no resource test for the MSP. That means you can have savings or other assets and still qualify.
Two Main Benefit Levels in New York
Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB):
Pays the Medicare Part A premium (for those who don’t qualify for it free)
Pays the Part B premium
Covers deductibles and coinsurance
If you have QMB, Medicare providers can’t bill you for Medicare cost-sharing
Qualifying Individual (QI):
Pays your Part B premium
If you qualify for certain MSP levels, then “Golley!”, you may also be eligible for a Dual-Eligible Medicare Advantage Plan (D-SNP), which can add even more benefits like:
Monthly allowances for over-the-counter items
Grocery cards for healthy food
Help with utilities
Dental, vision, and hearing coverage
One Important Thing to Remember - Some of these D-SNPs are HMOs, so they only cover in-network doctors. Always check that your providers are in the plan’s network before enrolling — or let us do the checking for you.
