Medicare Advantage vs. Supplement

Lately, my phone has been ringing with the same concern: rate increases on Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans. Understandably, this has caused many people to take another look at Medicare Advantage Plans.

It reminds me of those old Rock ’Em Sock ’Em Robots — two contenders in the ring, each with strengths, weaknesses, and plenty of fans cheering on their favorite. The question isn’t really “which robot wins,” but rather, which option best fits YOU, your needs, your doctors, your medications and your budget. Let’s break it down.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) at a Glance

Pros:

  • Freedom to see any doctor who accepts Medicare nationwide

  • Depending on which Supplement plan you choose, it may cover most or nearly all of Medicare’s gaps (but benefits vary from plan to plan)

  • No networks or referrals required

  • Some carriers even include extras like gym memberships

Cons:

  • Monthly premiums are higher (and many are rising right now)

  • No built-in prescription coverage (Part D must be purchased separately)

  • Do not cover dental, vision, or hearing

Medicare Advantage at a Glance

Pros:

  • Lower monthly premiums (sometimes even $0)

  • Some include extras like dental, vision, hearing, gym benefits, and OTC

  • Most plans include prescription drug coverage

  • Convenient “all-in-one” package

Cons:

  • Must use network providers (so it’s important to check your doctors and hospitals)

  • Out-of-pocket costs vary depending on how much care you use

  • Prior authorizations are required for certain services

New for 2026 - Prior Authorizations: Evening the Score

For years, prior authorizations were something people pointed to as a drawback of Medicare Advantage. But starting in 2026, Original Medicare will also require prior authorizations for certain services.  That means Medicare Supplements, which work with Original Medicare, will also be affected. It’s no longer a difference between the two choices — it’s simply how both systems will operate moving forward.

Flexibility in New York

Here in New York, we’re in a guaranteed issue state. That means you’re not locked in forever. You can move between Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans during:

  • Annual Election Period (AEP): October 15 – December 7

  • Open Enrollment Period (OEP): January 1 – March 31

This flexibility gives peace of mind — if your situation changes, you can make a new choice.

Why More People Are Considering Advantage Plans Now

With premiums on Supplements rising, more people are looking at the value of Medicare Advantage. Lower monthly costs and included extras are appealing, especially when household budgets are stretched.

It’s also important to address a common misconception: “Medicare Advantage is great… until you get sick or have a big hospital stay.” The truth is, most Advantage plans do require a hospital deductible, but after that, coverage is generally strong. For many people, the savings and bundled benefits make Advantage plans worth serious consideration.

 Who Comes Out on Top?

In this match-up, there’s no single champion. The “winner” depends entirely on your health needs, your budget, and your lifestyle. What matters most is that you understand your options and feel confident in your choice.  And remember: in this ring, the real winner should always be YOU.
