Unexpected hospital stays can still bring a fair amount of stress—and expense. One of the most misunderstood parts of Medicare is thinking that it covers everything. Original Medicare Part A offers important benefits, but there are some very real gaps—and those gaps can get expensive fast. — “Sure, the food’s bad and the beds are lumpy, but the real pain might come from the bill.”
Here’s how it breaks down in 2025:
Inpatient hospital deductible: $1,676
Daily copays:
Days 1–60: $0 after you pay the deductible
Days 61–90: $419 per day
Days 91–150: $838 per day (using your 60 Lifetime Reserve Days)
Once you’ve used up those 60 Reserve Days, they’re gone for good. After 150 days in the hospital, “You’re on your own, soldier.” Original Medicare stops paying, and you’re responsible for all the costs from that point forward.
A 90-day hospital stay could leave you with more than $14,000 of out-of-pocket costs. A full 150-day stay? Over $64,000. “A long tour could drain your resources.”
Original Medicare Has No Out-of-Pocket Maximum- No Cap- That’s why it’s so important to have a plan in place to complete your Medicare coverage—“Because while laughter is the best medicine, it won’t pay your copay.”
The good news? You don’t have to figure this out by yourself.
