When most people think about Medicare, they assume it covers just about everything. After all, you’ve paid into it for years, so it should take care of you now, right? While Medicare is good medical coverage, it might surprise you that some important things are not covered.
Original Medicare
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is designed to cover hospital care, doctor visits, and medically necessary services. It also has Part D -Prescription Drug coverage, whether it’s a stand-alone plan or included as part of a Medicare Advantage Plan. Original Medicare does not cover many services that help with everyday comfort, convenience, or long-term needs.
What Medicare Does NOT Cover
Dental Care - Routine dental services like cleanings, fillings, dentures, and extractions are not covered.
Vision Care - Routine eye exams, glasses, and contact lenses are not covered.
Hearing ServicesHearing aids and routine hearing exams are not covered under Original Medicare.
Routine Foot Care - Basic foot care such as nail trimming, corn, and callus removal is not covered unless there is a medical condition, like diabetes, that makes it necessary.
Long-Term Care - Medicare does not cover long-term nursing home care. It may cover short stays for rehabilitation, but not ongoing custodial care.
Alternative Treatments - Services such as acupuncture and naturopathy are generally not covered.
Cosmetic Procedures - Procedures done for appearance rather than medical necessity are not covered.
Care Outside the US - In most cases, Medicare does not cover care received outside of the United States.
Why This Matters
These are not unusual services. Many people use them regularly, and without planning ahead, the costs can come as a surprise.
How People Fill in the Gaps
The good news is you do have options. Some people choose Medicare Advantage Plans that may include dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Others purchase standalone plans for those specific needs. In addition, some Medicare Supplements and Medicare Advantage Plans offer certain Foreign Travel Emergency coverage. The key is finding coverage that fits your situation.
The Bottom Line
Medicare is strong when it comes to medical coverage, but it doesn’t cover everything. A plan may sound great, but if it doesn’t include the services you actually use, it may not be the right fit.
