Can I Keep My Doctors with a Medicare Advantage Plan?

It’s one of the first questions people ask. It’s a great question—and an important one. Medicare Advantage Plans are very similar to the health insurance plans that many people are familiar with through work or the marketplace. They are HMO and PPO Plans and are a more affordable option to Original Medicare with a Supplement. They also offer extra benefits like dental, vision and hearing, which are not covered under Original Medicare.
The good news is, many people are able to keep the doctors they know and trust. The key is to make sure the plan you choose works with your doctors.
How Doctor Networks Work
Medicare Advantage Plans use a network, a group of doctors, specialists, and hospitals that have agreed to work with a specific plan. It may be different than the corporate level plans within the same insurance carrier. When you choose a plan, you’ll want to make sure your primary doctor, specialists and preferred hospitals are covered. That way, everything works smoothly and you can continue your care without interruption.
Not All Plans Are the Same
One plan may include your doctor… while another plan may not. The networks can be very different even if both plans:
Have similar benefits
Have low or $0 premiums
Are offered in your area
Cover your medications the same
That’s why it’s not just about picking a plan that sounds good—it’s about choosing one that truly fits your situation and your budget.
HMO vs. PPO Plans - Two common types of Medicare Advantage Plans:
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization):
Choose doctors in the network(out-of-network typically not covered)
You may need referrals to see specialists
Often lower out-of-pocket costs
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization):
Choose doctors in the network, but can go outside the network if needed
No referrals required in most cases
More flexibility, with slightly higher costs for out-of-network care.
Some people prefer the structure of an HMO. Others like the flexibility of a PPO.
There’s no “one right answer”—it depends on what feels comfortable to you.
Why Research Is So Important
A plan can look great on paper—with low premiums and extra benefits—but if your doctors aren’t part of it, it may not be the right fit. That’s why taking a few extra minutes to check your doctors ahead of time can make all the difference. This is where working with a broker can really help. Instead of you having to sort through all the plans on your own, I can:
Check your doctors and specialists for you
Compare multiple plans side by side
Find options that include the providers you already use
Compare the cost of your prescriptions in each plan
The goal is simple: find a plan that fits you—not just one that looks good in general.
The Bottom Line
Yes—you can often keep your doctors with a Medicare Advantage Plan. The key is choosing the right plan from the start. With a little guidance and the right information, you can feel confident knowing your coverage supports the care you already have in place.
