What if Your New Medicare Advantage Plan Coverage Isn’t “Just Right”?
When it comes to Medicare Advantage Plans, many people find their coverage works beautifully. The benefits fit. The costs feel manageable. Their doctors are in network. And if that describes you, there may be no reason to make a change at all.
Medicare Advantage Plans Offer Valuable Benefits:
Affordable premiums
Prescription drug coverage built in
Dental, vision, and hearing benefits
Extra services such as fitness programs or over-the-counter allowances
An annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for medical services
These plans work very well for many people. However, sometimes health needs can change. Provider preferences can shift. And occasionally, a plan that seemed like a good fit may feel slightly “off” once you begin using it.
When Might a Plan Feel “Too Hot”?
A preferred doctor is no longer in the network
Referral requirements feel restrictive
Specialist visits are needed more often than expected
Copays are adding up differently than anticipated
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the plan is bad. It simply means it may not be the best fit for your current situation. And the good news is — you are not stuck for the entire year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment: January 1 – March 31
Each year, individuals who are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan have a special opportunity to make one change. During this period, you may:
✔ Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan OR
✔ Leave Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
If you return to Original Medicare, you may also enroll in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan and, in NY, you may enroll in a Medicare Supplement with no medical underwriting or fear of pre-existing, as long as you have had continuous coverage since age 65. Your new coverage typically begins the first day of the month after your request is received. This is a one-time opportunity during this period — which makes it important to review your situation carefully before making a change.
The Goal Is Comfort and Confidence
If your current Medicare Advantage plan feels just right — that’s wonderful. If something feels slightly out of balance, this enrollment period gives you the chance to adjust thoughtfully. Medicare coverage should support your health needs and give you confidence — not frustration. Sometimes a small change can make a big difference.
