Does Medicare Provide Dental Coverage?

In one of the most classic sketches on television at the time, the dentist’s chair became the setting for pure comedic chaos. While the sketch had us laughing until our cheeks hurt, the reality is—if it were a real dental visit—your wallet might hurt too.

Here’s the straight truth: Original Medicare (Parts A & B) does not cover routine dental care like cleanings, fillings, dentures, or extractions. The only time Medicare will help with dental is if it’s part of another covered medical procedure—such as jaw surgery after an accident or a dental exam before a heart valve replacement.

If you want coverage for regular dental care, you have two main options:

  • Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) — Many include dental benefits. The level of coverage can range from basic cleanings to more extensive services like crowns and dentures.

  • Standalone Dental Plans — Offered separately from Medicare, these plans focus solely on dental care and can be tailored to your needs.

  • Implants? – Not a chance

The takeaway? Don’t wait until you’re in the “hot seat” to find out you’re not covered. Let’s review your Medicare options so your smile—and your budget—are protected.
