There has been a lot of recent discussion about Medicare and coverage for certain weight-loss medications such as Wegovy and Zepbound. Beginning in July 2026, Medicare is expected to launch a temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program that may help some eligible Medicare beneficiaries access certain GLP-1 weight management medications at a lower cost.
At this time, details are still developing, including:
• Eligibility requirements
• How enrollment will work
• Which medications will be included
• How prior authorizations may be handled
The program is expected to run from:
• July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027
Current information suggests eligible beneficiaries may pay approximately $50 per month for certain covered medications. Because this is a new CMS demonstration program and not part of standard Medicare Part D coverage, guidance and procedures may continue to change as implementation gets closer. For the most current details regarding eligibility, enrollment, and medication coverage, beneficiaries should monitor updates directly through:
• CMS.gov
• Their physician
• Their Medicare prescription drug plan
As more official guidance becomes available, it will likely become much clearer how the program will operate.
