Under Original Medicare, each inpatient hospital stay has a deductible of $1,632(2024). There is no additional daily copay until day 61-90, where the daily copay is $408/day (2024). That length of stay can be quite expensive. If you have a 90 day stay in the hospital, you could owe over $13,000. After day 90, you may use some of your 60 Lifetime Reserve Days, where your daily copay will be $816/day. Once a Reserve Day is used, it's not available again. After 150 days in the hospital, you are responsible for all costs. There is no maximum limit to what you might have to pay out of pocket. This is why it is so important to evaluate the different types of Medicare Plans and how they can help cover those potentially expensive hospital stays. If you work with a broker, they can help you understand your options considering your specific needs, budget, doctors and medications. It could make a huge difference!
